Garden House

Looking out towards Central Park in Malvern, this project centres on the careful restoration and considered extension of a distinguished Edwardian red brick home. Featuring its original slate roof and heritage detailing, the existing house has been thoughtfully retained and rejuvenated to honour its architectural lineage.

In collaboration with interior design practice Georgina Jeffries, the design takes a restrained and respectful approach, allowing the original structure to maintain its prominence. A central landscaped garden acts as a breathing space between the old and the new – a quiet pause in the plan that encourages dialogue rather than dominance. This gesture not only separates but connects, allowing light, air, and nature to become key elements of the spatial experience.

The new addition is defined by its subtle material palette and textural richness – robust masonry walls finished in a soft stucco, delicately framed by fine steel glazing that reflects the surrounding greenery and pond. The architectural language is understated yet deliberate, drawing attention to craftsmanship and context rather than contrast.

The landscape, designed in partnership with Eckersley Garden Architecture, amplifies the project’s connection to nature. Garden views and filtered light soften the transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, blurring boundaries and enhancing liveability.

Internally, the home has been modernised for a growing family, with a focus on long-term sustainability and comfort. Contemporary upgrades include solar panels, battery storage, induction cooking, and high-performance HVAC systems – seamlessly integrated to bring the house into the 21st century without compromising its heritage character.

This project is a study in balance: between old and new, robustness and delicacy, function and beauty. It is a respectful continuation of an architectural story – one that embraces the past while confidently stepping into the future.
