Designed by Graeme Gunn Architect in 1967, this run down, four-bedroom home in Malvern is a significant example of Victoria’s mid-century buildings. Out of respect for one of Australia’s best architects, we aimed to achieve the delicate balance of completing a full internal renovation without placing any notable Pleysier Perkins style on the interiors.
As part of this sensitive and respectful restoration, we undertook some minor replanning, modernising the kitchen and laundry to accommodate a busy family of four, as well as completely replacing all wet areas, carefully relaying cork flooring to match the original, repairing all surfaces and restaining the timber.
The intentionally restrained palette of whites and natural timbers is designed not to compete with the original interiors, while the staircase carpet was removed and the staircase stripped back to its original design intent. Lead light ceiling panels made by the original owner were also repaired in an effort to restore the home while appearing like a renovation had never taken place at all.
