Hill View Sanctuary

  • Category House

  • Location Healesville, VIC

This four-bedroom residence on the outskirts of Healesville has been conceived as a rural pavilion, sitting on top of an undulating paddock with country views towards the Yarra Ranges. The long linear roof extends the entire length of the building, capping reclaimed brick wall panels and extensive glazing that frames views from every room. A black charred timber fascia contrasts the old brickwork, both robust and timeless materials in keeping with the country setting.

The simple rectangular form is punctuated by a series of courtyards that alter the scale of outdoor spaces. Carefully located to capture natural light, the courtyards frame views of the landscape and sky. Inside, a simple palette of white walls and joinery is offset with black infills, timber floorboards and the reclaimed bricks that enhance continuity from inside to out. A large brick open fireplace takes pride of place in the living room, which surrounded by full height glazing provides the ideal refuge to relax and soak in the spectacular and ever-changing rural panorama.
