An extension to an unassuming rendered single storey house on a leafy Elwood street aims to capture as much light as possible despite the property’s south facing orientation. Instead of the traditional backyard, the living spaces are arranged around two courtyards that capture the sun at different times of the day, creating different atmospheres and uses.
The perforated staircase filters sun from the morning garden, allowing uninterrupted views from the kitchen into the garden, while on the west side an entertaining garden gets the afternoon sun and magically fits a pool, spa, sun deck, terrace and covered barbecue. Voids and skylights capture Northern light where possible and a reduced materials palette consists of reclaimed brick, timber and metal screens. A new mezzanine also helps to create an open and spacious home despite the small building footprint.
