A modest 60s bungalow is doubled in size to accommodate a family of five, including two teenage sons and young daughter. The existing roof is mirrored in the extension to create a butterfly, which forms the oak-clad centrepiece of the house, sitting over the kitchen, dining and living area.
The extension is at natural ground level, three steps below the original floor level, and includes a sunken lounge, the boys’ bedrooms and a games room connected to the pool side deck. The dining area opens to a north facing deck and courtyard at the front of the house, providing outdoor entertaining space well separated from the teenager zone at the back. Referencing the original house, concrete blockwork features inside and out, as well as oak timber which is complemented by soft grey walls, black joinery and colour blocking to highlight key elements.
