The transformation of this mid-century modern house in Brighton preserves the architectural legacy of the 1960s mid-century style, while adding modern elements to accommodate contemporary life. Carefully preserving the floor slab and walls of the original home, a new second floor was added to expand the living space and enhance the home’s functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Outside, the white bagged brickwork serves as a neutral backdrop to the darker architectural elements, allowing the building to subtly blend into its environment. The use of breezeblocks filter natural light into the interior spaces, while carefully framing curated views of the private and tranquil courtyard garden, which has been created as an extension of the main living area.

Conveying a sense of openness and privacy, the exterior design integrates a pool, sauna, and a planted trellis, establishing a serene oasis that promotes relaxation and retreat. This private sanctuary seamlessly connects to the interior, offering a sense of flow between the indoor and outdoor spaces. The lush vegetation further softens the space, enriching the overall atmosphere of calm and contemplation.

Inside, a sophisticated palette of materials, textures and colours evoke the functional elegance of the era. Materials such as brass trims, dark-stained timber, reclaimed terrazzo, aged brass, and American oak are carefully juxtaposed with the brighter elements of the space, such as white brick walls and smooth plaster surfaces, creating a balanced contrast between light and dark tones.

The thoughtful choice of materials, along with the integration of natural light and greenery, creates a harmonious living space that honours the past while looking to the future. The design elevates the home into a modern retreat, where comfort, elegance, and tranquility coexist.
